Computer Keyboarding 1 Online
October 9-15

ORIENTATION NEXT WEEK: Some students need extra help making the transition into document production. Next week, you will use Word in practice exercises and document processing jobs and use the Reference Manual and the Proofreading Viewer in GDP. All document processing jobs will be graded and some documents will be designated as proofreading checks. All of this is explained in these weekly assignment sheets. However, if you would like an in-person orientation, check your e-mail for a specific date, time, and location and let me know if you plan on attending.

MICROSOFT WORD 2003: Course requirements state that you need to have Microsoft Word 2003 to take this course. If you don't have Word 2003, you should upgrade. If you choose not to upgrade, you may use Word 2002 but your tests on campus will all be taken using Word 2003 and the manual in your kit is for Word 2003. It is your sole responsibility to be prepared to take and pass all tests based on Word 2003. There aren’t a lot of differences between Word 2002 and Word 2003 but again, you will be held solely responsible for adjusting to any differences. If you read and understand the Word Manual in your kit, you should be sufficiently prepared. So, here is the information you need to upgrade or get started with Word 2002:

FAQ 6, Do I need Microsoft Word 2003 to take this course? at http://caot.lacitycollege.edu/001/FAQS.htm#Need_Word_2003 will tell you how to get a free trial version of Word or how to purchase Office 2003 for $64, which is a very reasonable price offered only to our students. You could also come to campus to type your documents.

If you decide to stay with Word 2002, go to the GDP menu, and click Options, Settings, to open the Settings dialog box. Under Word Processor, check Use Microsoft Word 2002. The path in the Path for Microsoft Word box will change automatically and should point to the directory where Word 2002 was installed by default. If you installed Word 2002 to a different place other than the default, you have to click Browse and find the file WINWORD.EXE yourself. Click Save and re-launch GDP, which means exit GDP and open GDP again. If you follow these steps and still have trouble, contact the software hotline for technical support. Their number is 800-331-5094. They are available 5 a.m. to 3 p.m. our time, M-F.

MAP: Misstroke Analysis and Prescription

MAP (Misstroke Analysis and Prescription) analyzes 75 different types of accuracy problems, identifies YOUR top four accuracy problems, and then prescribes a list of individual, corrective drills tailor made just for you. These drills are designed to correct your keyboarding weaknesses and help you avoid making similar errors in the future. Click View MAP Slide Show to view the slide show first before attempting MAP so you'll understand how it works.

MAP is the most sophisticated diagnostic software on the market today and you’ve got access to it anytime! Because the diagnostic drills you will type after you take the MAP pretest specifically target YOUR weaknesses, the drills will be difficult for you. But the payoff will be huge.

If you need to strengthen a weak muscle, you have to exercises it, right? The same goes for keyboarding weaknesses. They must be targeted and strengthened through systematic practice until they disappear. That’s what MAP does, so hang in there.

After you take the Pretest, type each of the four Prescriptive Drills once. You will be automatically returned to the Lessons menu when you are finished with all four Prescriptive drills to continue working on the lesson. If you want to continue working on accuracy, take a new Pretest and continue through the MAP routine one more time.
