to Keyboarding Online." This introductory online
orientation will help you get started and answer
questions you might have regarding Computer Keyboarding
Online.

Buy Your Textbook Kit and Install the GDP Program on
Your Home Computer:
You should be ready to
begin your lessons immediately after the Orientation
Meeting.
-
Check
Your E-Mail and Log On to Etudes-NG: Check for
emails during the first week of the semester.
After the Orientation Meeting, you should log on to
Etudes-NG at least three times a week to read class
announcements, discussion posting assignments, attend
"chat" sessions with your instructor, and read private
messages regarding your work,
your grades, and your progress.

- Click the
Assignments link at the top of this page. On the
Assignments page, click the Introduction and
Technique Check links and read them.
- Click the Week 1
link, print the directions for the first week, and READ
them! Your assignment sheets contain the daily
instruction you would normally get from your instructor in person in
a traditional course.
- You cannot succeed in
an online class unless you read your assignment sheets
carefully and follow the directions exactly.

Best Student
Practices for Installing GDP (Windows XP and
Windows Vista).
Read this before
installing GDP:
-
Close all
open programs including email, browser windows,
and virus software.
-
Do not change
defaults (program or data storage location)
during installation unless specifically
instructed to do so by your instructor.
-
Make sure the
log-on name entered into the Home installation
of GDP initially exactly matches
the name your instructor used in Instructor
Management on the Campus version of GDP and the
IMWS including matching the case (capitals and
lower-case letters).
-
Make sure the
e-mail address you entered into the Home
installation of GDP matches exactly
the e-mail address your instructor used in
Instructor Management on the Campus version of
GDP and the IMWS.
-
Make sure the
log-on password (if used) entered into the
Campus installation of GDP matches exactly the
password used to log into the Student Web Site
(if used), including matching the case.
-
Perform a
Live Update. Click
here
to troubleshoot any Live Update installation
issues. On the
Tips & FAQs
page, click FAQs, Installation and
Operation, for a detailed explanation of the
Live Update feature.
-
Verify you have the correct
version of Word® selected under
Options,
Settings,
Word
Processor.
If you change this setting, restart GDP.
-
Under Options, Personal Information,
Your initials, type in your correct
reference initials (lowercase, no spaces, no
periods, and no parentheses) and click OK.
Type these exact initials for any documents
requiring reference initials, such as
correspondence.
Note: It is
best to call the software hotline at
800-331-5094
before attempting these steps:

If using Windows
XP®, make sure you are logged into the computer
with an administrator account.
-
If using
Windows Vista®, make sure you are logged into
the computer with an administrator account
and follow the steps below prior
to using GDP: Right-click on the GDP Home
shortcut—Start, All Programs,
Irwin Keyboarding. Click
Properties, Compatibility tab. Check
Run this program as an administrator, and
click Apply, OK. Launch GDP using the
GDP shortcut. You will be prompted to “Cancel”
or “Allow” the program to run. You should select
“Allow."

Note: Students working at LACC should click
here to move to the Initial
Log-On steps.
- Place the GDP Home
Version CD into the CD-ROM drive. The installer
automatically launches after a few seconds. Follow the
Quick Start steps in green below.
Note: If the
install program does not launch automatically, from the
Windows menu, click Start, Run. In the Run
window, type x:\setup (replace "x:"
with the letter for your CD-ROM drive, which is probably
"d:"). Click OK.
Quick
Start: Next; I
accept the terms of the license agreement, Next;
Next; Next; Next; Finish.

When
you click Finish.
An Irwin
Keyboarding program group opens with this shortcut.
Right-click the icon and send a shortcut to your Windows
Desktop. Use this shortcut to launch GDP.
Note: If you
installed incorrectly and need to uninstall GDP, click
here for steps.

At
home, double-click the GDP Home icon on the
Desktop to launch GDP; or in Windows, click
Start, Programs, Irwin Keyboarding,
GDP Home. |
 |
In
the COAT Department at LACC, double-click the
GDP CAOT 1,2,3 icon to launch GDP. Select
your class (Morimoto Online) from the class
drop-down list on the Welcome screen, and click
New Student.
Fill in your
first and last name. If you see a Password
box, type spring as your Password
if it is the Spring Semester or fall as
your password if it is the Fall Semester;
retype it in the Retype Password box, and
click Save. |
- Type
your information, click Save, and GDP will open.
 |

GDP will
launch and check for Live Updates if you are on the Internet
when you open GDP. The first time you install GDP, you
should always check for a Live Update so you are using the
most current version.
Note:
It is imperative that you always perform a Live Update to
ensure that you are working with the correct version of GDP,
which includes software functionality upgrades, corrections
to errata, and so forth. Click
here
to troubleshoot any Live Update installation issues. On the
Tips & FAQs page, click FAQs, Installation and
Operation, for a detailed explanation of the Live Update
feature.
If you are not on the Internet when you open GDP for the
first time, log-on to the Internet, click Help, Live
Update, and follow the prompts to download the latest
version of GDP.
- To find
out what version of GDP you are using, click Help,
About, from the GDP menu in the upper left hand
corner of the screen. See the lines at the bottom that
indicate "Version" followed by a date, installation
mode, and Live Update versions.
- The
Online Tutorial starts. Click the numbered buttons
at the bottom of the screen to complete the tutorial and
click Exit when you're done.

Note: Students
using the Labs at LACC should not follow
the steps below and should click
here to move to the "Type
Your Lessons" steps below.

From the menu, click
Options, Settings, to open the Settings
dialog box. Fill in, check, or uncheck all boxes as
shown below.
Mrs. Morimoto's students
should type "morimocs@lacitycollege.edu"
instead of Ms. Zimmerly's
e-mail address in the Instructor's e-mail address box.
The URL for the Web button is
gdpstudent.mhhe.com. Click Save. Click
here for more detailed steps to set the path for
Microsoft Word.

Note:
Under Full Editing, in Timed Writings, correcting
errors on timings is your choice. If you correct errors on
timings, your speed is decreased and your concentration
might be broken. However, some students relax more during a
timing when they know they can correct errors and therefore
do better. Make your choice here based on your own skills
and preferences. |

Note:
If you are using the
first printing of Gregg College Keyboarding & Document
Processing, Microsoft Office Word 2007 Update and the
first printing of the Microsoft Office Word 2007 Update
Manual for Gregg College Keyboarding & Document Processing,
your books are no longer synchronized with changes and
corrections made to the GDP software via GDP's Live Update
feature. This will result in document scoring errors
occurring in documents that you have typed correctly.

current GDP software and to provide you with valuable tips
and information as you complete your document processing
jobs in the text and practice exercises in the Word Manual.

To begin
working in GDP, select a lesson from the Lessons
menu.
Follow the directions on
the screen and those from your weekly assignment
sheet to type your lessons. You are responsible for
checking due dates on your assignment sheet and
submitting your work to me on time.

Note: If
you don't have Word at home, click
here for information on how to use the labs at LACC
to type your documents or click
here for information on getting Word.

To review
your completed work, click Portfolio. If you want
to view only certain lessons or exercises, click the
Filter Portfolio button, make the desired choices,
and click OK. Select the desired exercise(s) and
click View Text to view the Detailed
Report.

After you complete your work for the day, upload
your work to me as shown below. If you want to
print the presentation below, right-click the
link and choose Print Target. |
Using Upload to Transfer Work |
 |
Learn to use
GDP's Upload feature to transfer work
from a computer to the Instructor Management Web
site and Student Web Site. This presentation is
for students who work at home, upload to the
Instructor Management Web site, and use the
Student Web site. |
Upload Quick Start:
Upload; Upload all work; Upload Work to Student Upload
Web Site; Browse (browse to desired location to
save file—at LACC, store file on Desktop), Store
the Upload File; right-click in the Browse box,
Paste, Upload.

Upload Feature |
- Click Upload.
- In the Upload
window, click Upload all work.
- Click the second button,
Upload Work to Student Upload Web Site.
Note:
If you receive a message that says, "No new
files to upload!" and you want to upload
anyway or want to be sure all your files
have been sent, click OK. Return to
GDP and click Upload, Upload all
work.

- In the
Upload Work
window, click Store the Upload File.
You will see your own first and last name
in this box when you are sending your
upload file.

- Your browser will open
automatically to the Student Upload Web
Site.
- Right-click and click
Paste in the Browse box to paste the
path to the most recent upload file.
- Click Upload to
send your work to the Instructor Management
Web site.

- When the upload is
complete, you will see a report indicating
which files were successfully uploaded and
your e-mail address as you stored it in GDP
under Options, Personal Information.
If you get a message that the upload was not
successful, contact me.

In the Home
installation of GDP, click Options, Personal
Information.
Verify that your e-mail address is correct in the
Your e-mail address box. It must be an exact match
to your e-mail address at the Instructor Management Web
site and at the Student Web site.
Note:
Students working at LACC should skip this step and go
directly to the next step.

Go
to the
SWS
at
http://gdpstudent.mhhe.com and type your e-mail
address in the Your E-mail Address box and type
type
spring as your Password if it is the Spring
Semester or fall as your password if it is the
Fall Semester
in the Your Password box and click Log On.
The e-mail address
must be an exact match to your e-mail address in GDP and
at the Instructor Management Web site.
Note: If your password doesn't work, e-mail me
and I'll reset it. Please do not change it or check it.

When you successfully
upload your work to the Instructor Management Web Site, I
will automatically receive an e-mail message notifying me of
your new work (see below for an example) and all your
work is also automatically sent to the Student Web Site.
I will
annotate your work and e-mail you with directions to go the
SWS
and check for annotations. If you don't get a response from
me within a day of uploading, please e-mail me. To check for
annotations, do this:

Log
on to the
SWS
using your new
2-letter password.
-
Click
Student Portfolio, View Portfolio; look under the
Date column for the letter "A," and place a check mark
next to each of these exercises. The "A" means that I
have annotated this exercise.

Click
View Detailed Report, read the comments in the
General Comments box, mouse over the Annotation icon
to view my annotations.
-
Read any comments
in the General Comment box and hold your mouse over the
page icon to see any annotations. Scroll down to be sure
you don't miss any annotations.
Click Log Off when
you're done.

Progress
Folder. Download
your Progress Folder from the Assignments page. As you read
your e-mail or view your annotations, record your
formatting grades,
proofreading check grades, and notes on the Progress
Folder.

GDP
Upload Quick Start: Upload; Upload all work;
Upload Work to Student Upload Web Site; Browse
(browse to desired location to save file—at LACC, store
file on Desktop), Store the Upload File;
right-click in the Browse box, Paste,
Upload.
SWS
Download Grades Quick Start: Log in at the
Student Web Site;
click Download Grades tab; Download
Grades; Save, browse to desired destination,
Save, Close.
GDP Import Quick Start:
File, Import
Student Data;
in the Look In box, click the list arrow,
browse to your .EXP file (which has your
first and last name), and click it; click
Import.
Note:
Repeat these steps when you leave and move to your
second location. Students working only at home may skip
this presentation. If you want to print this
presentation, right-click the desired link and choose
Print Target.
