Bulleted and Numbered Lists
Lesson 28, Reports
with Lists
28-H. Bulleted and Numbered Lists
 |
Use numbers or
bullets to call attention to items in a list. If the sequence of the
items is important, use numbers rather than bullets. |
 |
Numbers and bullets
appear either at the left margin or are indented to the same point as
the paragraphs in the document. Use the Decrease Indent or
Increase Indent buttons in Word to adjust the position of the list
as needed. |
 |
By default, the
numbers and bullets themselves are followed by an indent, and carryover
lines are indented automatically to align with the text in the previous
line, not the bullet or number. |

type information to be formatted as a list with text only first. When
you are completely done, go back and select the desired lines in the
list and then apply the bullet or number feature. |

Lists at a Glance
Numbers or bullets may be used in
letters, memos, and reports to call attention to items in a list. If the
sequence of the items is important, use numbers rather than bullets.
 | Begin the number or bullet at the
paragraph point; that is, at the left margin for blocked paragraphs and
indented 0.5 inch for indented paragraphs. |
 | Insert 1 blank line before and after
the list.
Within the list, use the same spacing (single or double) as is used in
the rest of the document. |
 | For single-spaced documents, if all
items require no more than one line, single-space the items in the list.
If any item requires more than one line, single-space each item but
insert a blank line between each item. |
To format a list:
- Type the list unformatted.
- Select the items in the list.
- Apply the number or bullet feature.
- If necessary, use the Decrease
Indent or Increase Indent button in Microsoft Word to adjust
the position of the list.
The three bulleted and numbered lists
shown below are all formatted correctly.
