Lists at a Glance

Numbers or bullets may be used in letters, memos, and reports to call attention to items in a list. If the sequence of the items is important, use numbers rather than bullets.

bulletBegin the number or bullet at the paragraph point; that is, at the left margin for blocked paragraphs and indented 0.5 inch for indented paragraphs.
bulletInsert 1 blank line before and after the list.
Within the list, use the same spacing (single or double) as is used in the rest of the document.
bulletFor single-spaced documents, if all items require no more than one line, single-space the items in the list. If any item requires more than one line, single-space each item but insert a blank line between each item.

To format a list:

  1. Type the list unformatted.
  2. Select the items in the list.
  3. Apply the number or bullet feature.
  4. If necessary, use the Decrease Indent or Increase Indent button in Microsoft Word to adjust the position of the list.

The three bulleted and numbered lists shown below are all formatted correctly.
