If there is any doubt as to whether you have these skills, click on each of the links at the left, beginning with Navigate, then GDP, etc.

1. Open Internet Explorer by clicking the Internet Explorer Browser icon on the Windows Quick Launch toolbar next to the Start button and then click the Close button to close it. (Note: If you are completing this at home, your settings might be different from those in our labs. We use Windows XP and use a Quick Launch toolbar.) If you don't see the Quick Launch toolbar, right-click the taskbar, Toolbars, check Quick Launch.
2. Click the Maximize button and Restore Down buttons and practice dragging on the edge of the window to resize this window. Click the Minimize button and then click the icon for this browser window to maximize the browser window.
3. Mouse over any browser icons in the Windows taskbar at the bottom of the screen and read the pop-up screen tips.
4. Click Favorites and click CAOT 1, Keyboarding Online to open the Keyboarding 1 Web site then close the browser window. (To add a Favorite Web site, go to the desired URL in your browser; click Favorites, Add to Favorites, to add it to your list of Favorites.)

Progress Folder

1. To download the Progress Folder Word file for CAOT 1 and open it in your browser, click here
      OR

2. To save the file to your computer, right-click here and click Save Target As. NOTE: If you are asked to enter a network password when you are downloading these files, just click Cancel. In the Save As window, click the Desktop icon in the left panel to save the Progress Folder Word file to the Windows Desktop or browse to the desired directory; click Save. When the download is complete, click Open to open the Progress Folder or Close to do nothing.

4. Listen to the Online Welcome Tutorial.
5. To begin working in GDP, select a lesson from the Lessons menu.
6. For this tutorial, select Lesson 1, Exercise J, 1-Minute Timed Writing, OK.
7. Read the directions and click the Next button at the bottom of the GDP window 3 times until you get to the 1-minute timed writing window.
8. Open the book to Lesson 1, Lines 18-19, or look at the projection screen in the front of the room, and take the timing. The timer starts with your first keystroke.
9. When the timing is over, read the directions and click the the Next button. Click Yes to review scored text. Click the the Next button. For now, click No to the prompt asking if you want to repeat the timing.
10. Go to Lesson 25, Correspondence 25-1, double-click, read the directions, and click the the Next button; click Create Correspondence 25-1; type Hi, Muriel:  and click GDP, Return to GDP, Yes (to save), Yes (to score, Yes (to review), and click the the Next button.
11. Click the Portfolio button and click OK to see your timing and Correspondence 25-1. In the Student Portfolio window, click the 1' timing and click the View Text button; do the same for Correspondence 25-1; click Return to Program to return to the Lesson menu.
12. Reselect Correspondence 25-1  and click Edit Correspondence 25-1. Notice that the Proofreading Viewer opens. Edit the text in the window at the bottom and exit and save. Click here for steps to edit a document and use the Proofreading Viewer.
13. Click here for the steps to Upload your work.
14. Close GDP.

1. Launch Internet Explorer and launch and open your e-mail account. Under Favorites, you will find links for Hotmail, Yahoo, AOL, etc. I will demonstrate Hotmail but they are all basically the same. Click here for directions to use your LACC e-mail account.
2. In Hotmail, click the Compose tab.
3. In the To box, type my e-mail address. Check for it in the Schedule of Classes.
4. In the CC or Copy box, type your e-mail address so that you can save a copy of this e-mail unless your software automatically saves sent files.
5. In the Subject box, type your first and last name, and NW for new work.
6. For purposes of this tutorial only, attach the Export file. (Normally, you would just upload this to the Student Web Site.) Click the Add/Edit Attachments button.
7. Follow the directions there and attach the *.EXP export file that you saved on the Desktop. (1. Click Browse to select the file, or type the path to the file in the box below. 2. Move the file to the Attachments box by clicking Attach. Click OK.).
8. Click Send to send the e-mail and attachment.
9. Save all e-mails from me until you are sure your grades are properly recorded and you have finished completely with an assignment.
10. To reply to an e-mail from me, open the e-mail and click the Reply button. Be sure that the original message is part of the reply.

Note: When you enroll in any class at LACC, you are automatically assigned an e-mail account. Your LACC e-mail address begins with your userID (also known as your alias) followed by userid@email2.lacitycollege.edu

The userID is composed of:

1. First 2 letters of your first name;
2. First 2 letters of your last name;
3. Last 5 digits of your student identification number.

Accordingly, a student named John Smith with a student identification number of 123-45-6789 would have a userID of josm56789. His e-mail address would be josm56789@email2.lacitycollege.edu You might want to copy and paste @email2.lacitycollege.edu into the Email Address field and then add your user ID in front.

1. Click the Windows Start button, Search, For Files and Folders.
2. In the left panel, click Documents (word processing, spreadsheet, etc.)
3. In the All or part of the document name box, type *.doc.
4. Click Use advanced search options.
5. In the Look in box, click the list arrow and click Desktop.
6. Click the Search button. You should see all files stored in the Desktop ending in doc listed.
7. Right-click the desired file, and click Delete. Notice the other choices of Open, Print, Copy, etc.
8. Click Start a new search.
9. Click All files and folders.
10. In the All or part of the find name box, type GDPDATA. This is the default directory name where your data files are stored.
11. In the Look in box, click the list arrow and click 3½ Floppy (A:) if you are storing GDP files on a floppy OR click Local Hard Drives (C:) if you are storing GDP files on your hard drive.
12. When the directory is found, click Stop.
13. Click the icon for GDPDATA to open the folder. Notice the *.DRP files and the *.doc Word file(s). Occasionally, students have to attach these files to an email to troubleshoot a problem.
14. Close the Search Results window.
15. Right-click the Windows Start button and click Explore; in the Folders panel, browse to the GDPDATA directory and open it; click the Close button.

If you want to find the version of GDP or Word, do this:

1. Open GDP or Word.

2. From the GDP Help menu, click About. In the GDP window, you will see the version number. To be sure you are using the most recent version of GDP, click Options, Settings; under Live Update, check Notify me when new updates to the GDP software are available for download. Each time you log on, GDP will verify that you have the latest version of GDP.

3. From the Word Help menu, click About Microsoft Office Word. In the About Microsoft Word window, you will see the version in the first line.

If you want to send me a print screen of anything on your computer screen so that I can help you troubleshoot a software problem, do this:

1. Press the Print Screen button on your keyboard, which is usually found on the right side of the top row of the keyboard. This takes an actual "picture" of your computer screen at that point.

2. To capture only the active window rather than your entire screen, press Alt-Print Screen together. Open Word and click Paste to see a screen capture of the active window only.

3. To capture only the active window rather than your entire screen, press Alt-Print Screen together.
   Try it: To see how this works, from your browser window, click Help, About Internet Explorer; press Alt-Print Screen. Open Word and click Paste to see a screen capture of the active window only.

If you want to delete all files and directories created by GDP in order to fix a technical problem and assuming you installed it with the default directories, do this:

1. Open Windows Explore—right-click the Windows Start button, and click Explore.

2. Browse to the C:\GDPHOME directory (or the directory where you installed GDP).

3. Right-click the C:\GDPHOME directory and click Delete.

4. To delete the data files also, browse to the C:\GDPDATA directory (or the directory where you store your student data).

5. Right-click the C:\GDPDATA directory and click Delete.

If you want to delete any GDP shortcuts or the program group, do this:

1. On the Windows Desktop, delete any shortcut you might have copied here. Right-click the shortcut and click Delete.

2. Click the Windows Start button, Programs; right-click Irwin Keyboarding and click Delete.

If you want to rename a file, do this:

1. In Windows Explore or on the Windows Desktop, right-click the desired file.

2. Click Rename. Type the new name in box and click outside the box.
