Week 6

Computer Keyboarding 1 Online
March 15-21

ORIENTATION NEXT WEEK: Some students need extra help making the transition into document production. Beginning with Lesson 21, you will use Word in practice exercises and document processing jobs and the Proofreading Viewer in GDP. All document processing jobs will be graded and some documents will be designated as proofreading checks. All of this is explained in these weekly assignment sheets. However, if you would like additional help, email your instructor first for the date and plan to attend the Friday traditional CAOT 1 class in DH 204 at 9 a.m. on a Friday.  Word processing demonstrations usually begin at 9:45 a.m., so plan to arrive by 9:30 a.m.

MICROSOFT WORD:  Course requirements state that you need to have Microsoft Word 2007 to take this course. If you don't have Word 2007, you should upgrade. If you choose not to upgrade and use Word 2003,  please be advised that your tests on campus will all be taken using Word 2007 and that the manual in your kit is for Word 2007. It is your sole responsibility to be prepared to take and pass all tests using Word 2007.

FAQ 6, Do I need Microsoft Word 2007 to take this course?  http://caot.lacitycollege.edu/001/FAQS.htm#Need_Word_2003 will tell you how to get a free trial version of Word or how to purchase Office 2007 for about $79 (the price may vary), which is a very reasonable price offered only to California community college students. If you do not wish to purchase Office 2007, you could also come to campus to type your documents in the CAOT labs.

If you decide to stay with Word 2003 go to the GDP menu, and click Options, Settings, to open the Settings dialog box. Under Word Processor, check Use Microsoft Word 2003. The path in the Path for Microsoft Word box will change automatically and should point to the directory where Word 2003 was installed by default. If you installed Word 2003 to a different place other than the default, you have to click Browse and find the file WINWORD.EXE yourself. Click Save and re-launch GDP, which means exit GDP and open GDP again. If you follow these steps and still have trouble, contact the software hotline for technical support. Their number is 800-331-5094. They are available 5 a.m. to 3 p.m. our time, M-F.

Click here to go to a Gregg College Keyboarding and Document Processing training site to access a series of training videos on different exercise types used in GDP. Click MAP in the left pane, and then click 3 Step Process in the bottom pane to view a training video explaining in depth how MAP drills work. After viewing the 3 Step Process video, click MAP in the left pane again, and click Keyboard Drills in the bottom pane to see how to use MAP for intensive practice on any key on the keyboard. Your skillbuilding is always more effective when you understand and focus on your goals for that particular drill. Enjoy!

MAP: Misstroke Analysis and Prescription

MAP (Misstroke Analysis and Prescription) analyzes 75 different types of accuracy problems, identifies YOUR top four accuracy problems, and then prescribes a list of individual, corrective drills tailor made just for you. These drills are designed to correct your keyboarding weaknesses and help you avoid making similar errors in the future. Click View MAP Slide Show to view the slide show first before attempting MAP so you'll understand how it works.

MAP is the most sophisticated diagnostic software on the market today and you’ve got access to it anytime! Because the diagnostic drills you will type after you take the MAP pretest specifically target YOUR weaknesses, the drills will be difficult for you. But the payoff will be huge.

If you need to strengthen a weak muscle, you have to exercise it, right? The same goes for keyboarding weaknesses. They must be targeted and strengthened through systematic practice until they disappear. That’s what MAP does, so hang in there.

After you take the Pretest, type each of the four Prescriptive Drills once. You will be automatically returned to the Lessons menu when you are finished with all four Prescriptive drills to continue working on the lesson. If you want to continue working on accuracy, take a new Pretest and continue through the MAP routine one more time.

Lesson 20-J K

Lesson 20-K, 2-Minute Timed Writing
TW Goal: 28/5e

Submit your lessons, check your annotations, and go to Week 7 for specific instructions.  Getting the hang of it?   J If not, contact your instructor immediately.
Assignment SheetsIf your copy of the Assignment Sheet ends with Lesson 22, click here to download and print pages 2, 3, and 4.  You should be recording (writing) your timing score (your wpm speed/errors) into the "Student" column on your Assignment Sheet as you complete each lesson.

Starting with Lesson 21, read the information on the Assignment Sheet to the far right of the lesson you will be working on BEFORE you begin the lesson because the lesson no longer ends with the timing; you should open your Word Processing Manual to complete the word processing lesson as well.
