What is Keyboarding 3?

Keyboarding 3 is an advanced keyboarding "finishing" course for those students who have nearly completed the requirements for a CAOT certificate and are ready to venture out to seek employment in today's high tech office environment. It is scheduled as a "traditional" course in which students meet on-campus biweekly and apply the skills, experiences, and knowledge they have accumulated by completing other courses here at City College.  Speed and efficiency using MS Word to produce mailable quality office documents under timed conditions are emphasized to foster increased productivity in every student.

What skills are needed to be successful in this course?

bulletCompletion of CAOT 2 (Intermediate Keyboarding) with a grade of "C" or higher or the ability to type 40 words a minute on five-minute timed writings with 5 or fewer errors.

bulletCompletion of CAOT 84 or the ability to use the various features of word processing software (MS Word 2003) is required.

bulletFor ESL students:  Speech 113 is recommended.

Students who do not have these skills should enroll in either CAOT 2 (Intermediate Keyboarding) or CAOT 9 (Keyboarding Improvement) AND CAOT 84 (Word Processing) this semester and return to CAOT 3 after these skills have been acquired. Students are expected to be able to create (correctly format) and edit merge letters, reports, tables, and documents containing graphic elements in MS Word.

When and where?

Normally this course meets every Tuesday and Thursday from 12:10-2:40 p.m. on the second floor of Da Vinci Hall.  Please check the Fall 2008 Schedule of Classes for details.

What do I get upon completing this course?

In addition to achieving the end goals for this course and earning 3 units of credit, students achieving their desired keyboarding speed with accuracy may request a keyboarding speed certifica-tion card issued by the CAOT Department, such as the one shown here.

CAOT Certificates.
Many students who have completed the requirements for the Level 1 "Clerical Office Assistant" Certificate and who subsequently complete CAOT 3 along with other specified courses receive Level 2 "Administrative Office  Assistant," "Computer Applications Specialist," "Legal Office Assistant," or "Medical Office Assistant" Certificates of Completion to prepare them for specialty jobs in these areas.

These certificates are awarded at a yearly Certificates and Awards Program held by the CAOT Department in honor of these students.  Scholarships are also awarded to students who have distinguished themselves within the department.  Below are some photographs taken of recipients at past Certificates and Awards Programs.
