GETTING STARTED

INTRODUCTION

Getting started in this course is easy.

First, explore this web site.  Be sure to visit the Home page, Course Outline, FAQS, and Student Information Sheet and follow the instructions on those pages before proceeding to the other links.

Second, purchase your textbook and other course materials immediately. You will then be ready to begin the first assignment as soon as it is assigned.  If you are unable to handle all of the costs associated with the first week of school, let your instructor know.  Copies of the textbook may be available for loan in the LACC Library or in the CAOT Department until you can obtain your own copy.

Third, when the room seating chart comes around (usually during Week 2), select a work station near the front of the room and avoid sitting in the last row, where it can be difficult to hear and see your instructor's daily Word demonstrations.  You'll feel more in tuned with the rest of the class, and your instructor will appreciate having your undivided attention during discussions and demonstrations.

Next, click on the links in the Navigation Bar to the left.  For now, skip the  "Word Document Window" link (the quality of the printout is poor, so I will provide you with a clear copy to work from).  We will review the  Word 2007 Document Window as a class exercise during the first two weeks of the semester, so be sure to bring it to class with you after you have received it.  Memorizing the parts of the Word Document Window and using this terminology to communicate effectively can be empowering.  When your computer hardware falters or the Word program is not operating as it should, being able to describe the problem to another word processing professional, your office manager, or a computer technician sets a tone of professionalism that reflects well on you.  In addition, I will be referring to the parts of the Word Document Window during my class room demonstrations, so this is another incentive for taking the time to learn the correct names.

Begin with the "Weekly Homework" link. You may wish to print a copy to keep as reference if you did not receive one in class.  You should refer to this sheet the weekend before or at least one day before each class meeting and follow the instructions.  Reviewing the Word functions listed BEFORE COMING TO CLASS will assure that you will be prepared to complete the assignments on time.  Then click on the "Assignment Sheet" link if you wish to view the assignment sheet.  The remaining links to the left are just for fun!
