CLASSROOM POLICIES

  1. NO SMOKING, FOOD, OR DRINKS ARE PERMITTED IN CLASSROOMS. PLEASE DO NOT BRING YOUR CHILDREN TO CLASS, AS DOING SO IS PROHIBITED BY SCHOOL POLICY AND YOU WILL BE ASKED TO LEAVE.

  2. Each student is expected to do his/her own work. If you make your class work available to other students to copy, all students involved will receive zeroes. Talking or sharing of information during an exam is considered cheating with the same penalty applied. Dishonesty will not be tolerated.

  3. Please refrain from scheduling dental, doctor, and other personal appointments during class time. On those rare occasions when you cannot avoid being absent, your assignments are due the day you return to class if you wish to receive full credit. An employer would expect all work missed during an absence to be made up immediately. You are responsible for everything covered in class during your absence, so get the email address or phone number of a classmate or ask a classmate to take notes for you. All assignments can be completed on time if you review the next assignment before coming to class, are prepared to do the work, and are in your seat ready to begin promptly each class period. Late assignments will be accepted only from students who were absence (one class period after originally due with no grade deduction) or from students who were unable to finish the assignment in class one period late with a grade deduction (an "A" lowered to a "B" grade).

  4. Students are expected to devote at least five hours per week to this class beyond our regular class meetings to complete skill building assignments not completed in class, to edit ("redo") unmailable assignments, and review lessons in the word processing manual. You may enroll in CAOT 64 for one unit of credit if you anticipate using the CAOT  labs for two or more additional hours per week. (Enroll during the first two weeks of the semester in DH 207.)

  5. Because of the time needed to complete classwork and exams, no make-up exams will be given during our scheduled class time or after the graded exams have been returned to students.  Therefore, special arrangements must be made immediately to make-up a missed exam.

ATTENDANCE

Five hours per week are required, and regular attendance is expected. Please inform your instructor (as you would your employer) if you must be absent from class. A written message is preferred.

EVALUATION

bullet

40% Straight-copy timed writings to measure speed and accuracy. The three best  five-minute timings with a minimum of 97.8% accuracy will be averaged using the following scale:

A = 60 wam

7 errors max.

B = 55-59 wam

6 errors max.

C = 50-54 wam

6 errors max.

D = 45-49 wam

6 errors max.

If the above error limit is exceeded, the grade will be lowered as follows:

1-3 errors more (8-10 errors total), lowered 1 grade

4-6 errors more (11-13 errors total), lowered 2 grades

bullet

30% Production work (document processing): Each document will be graded individually and all grades averaged at the end of the semester. A document graded as "unmailable" may be corrected as homework outside of class and resubmitted within the first five minutes of the start of the next class meeting for a grade of "C" (average). Important: Staple the corrected printout of an unmailable document to the original printout. Failure to follow these steps will result in a grade of "F" (unmailable) for that particular assignment.

bullet

30% Timed production tests. Three timed production tests will be given during the semester. Each test requires that three properly formatted documents be completed in one hour’s time.

bullet

Please note that deductions in the final grade will be made at the instructor’s discretion, as follows:

Excessive absences (-1% for each absence over five hours), excessive tardiness (3 tardies will count as an absence), or an excessive number of late/missing assignments, including skill building exercises not completed as assigned.

LACC'S ACADEMIC STANDARDS POLICY

Enrollment in a class may be terminated due to unsatisfactory student conduct, undue disrespect towards an instructor or administrator, or academic dishonesty.  Each student is responsible for maintaining standards of academic performance established for each course in which he or she is enrolled.*

If you violate the Standard of Student Conduct for Dishonesty, your instructor will complete a Faculty Disciplinary Form indicating the code of conduct that was violated, explaining the facts and details of the charge, and noting the disciplinary action taken.  This form will be signed by both you and your instructor and will be filed with the Dean of Student Services for reference in case of repeat violations.

The CAOT Department's and LACC's complete policies regarding student conduct can be accessed by clicking the icon below:

Such topics as Lab Rules of Conduct, Student Discipline Procedures, Classroom Conduct, Attendance, and Course Repetition to Improve Grades are covered in depth.

Best wishes for a productive semester!
