GRADING POLICIES  Return to top of page

TESTS Three tests--each one consisting of a production test and a written test (taken in Etudes-NG)--will be given during the semester. The production test consists of creating a project similar to those created in the textbook chapters. Each written test consists of 50 true/false and multiple choice questions based on instructor "notes" (located in Etudes-NG "Modules"), the textbook chapters, and  material covered in discussion postings. Extra credit questions are often included on written tests to give students the opportunity to improve their test scores.  Reading your instructor's notes (in "Modules") attentively and carefully will reveal the topics likely to be included in extra credit questions.

Students are requested to come to campus for a one-hour review session followed by the production and written tests with their instructor.  If that is not possible, students may arrange to take their tests with a proctor; however, all arrangements with an approved institution must be made by the student and all fees involved must be covered by the student.

F:\Documents and Settings\Cary\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\MT4186P5\MCj04125640000[1].wmfPARTICIPATION:  Students are expected to interact with their "classmates" by regularly participating in the Etudes-NG discussion forums.  Four to six thoughtful discussion postings are required during the semester on a discussion topic or question posted by the instructor based on chapter material being covered, a current event, or some other topic related to this course.  Students are expected to respond to the discussion posting within one week (seven days) after the posting. The discussion forums are places where you can communicate with your classmates and interact with them as you would in the traditional classroom setting. They are intended to offset the isolation of the online learning environment and to help you stay involved and connected to one another and to your instructor.  The forums are monitored daily to assure that postings are appropriate and cordial.

Student questions and problems should be posted in the "Questions and Problems" discussion forum; all students are encouraged to respond to fellow students' questions and help students problem solve.

ATTENDANCE:  Students should logon to the CAOT 84 course site in Etudes-NG at the minimum every other day during the semester to respond to discussion postings, as well as read class announcements, etc.
In an online course, it is essential that students be "proactive"; you should check the announcements, discussion forums, private messages, and all other pages in the CAOT 84 Etudes-NG course site at least three tmes a week!

bullet

DEDUCTIONS: Deductions of 10 percent of the final grade may be made for each of the following:  nonparticipation in required discussion forum postings, failure of student to access the course site in Etudes-NG on a regular basis (at least three times per week), and/or failure to maintain regular contact with the instructor by reading all class announcements and instructor messages in Etudes-NG and responding to those messages when appropriate.

bullet

WORKLOAD: Expect to dedicate about ten hours each week to this class, reading the textbook, completing textbook chapter projects and assignments on the computer, taking practice tests, preparing for production and written tests, and participating in class discussion forums (generally six to eight postings).

bullet

ASSIGNMENTS: Students are expected to complete chapter projects and other activities and to submit them by their due dates as file attachments in the ASSIGNMENTS, TESTS, AND SURVEY page in the COAT 84 Etudes-NG class site.  In fairness to all students, no chapter projects or end-of-chapter assignments will be accepted late after the first two weeks. After the first two weeks of the semester, graded "assessments" may be submitted 24 hours after the shown due date on the ASSIGNMENTS page in Etudes-NG, as a 24-hour grace period will be given.  After the 24-hour grace period, the link to submit the assignment will become inactive; and it will not be possible to submit files thereafter. Don't allow yourself to fall behind; check the MODULES and ASSIGNMENTS, TESTS, AND SURVEY pages regularly to keep up with class assignments.

Extra Credit: There will be several opportunities to earn extra credit points to makeup for missing assessments; therefore, please refrain from asking your instructor to accept late work.

ONLINE OFFICE HOURS

During the second week, your instructor's online office hours--where you can "meet" her in real time in the Etudes-NG Chat Room--will be posted at the top of the Home Page.  Participation is not mandatory; however, your instructor will appreciate and enjoy hearing from you from time to time about any problems you are encountering or the progress you are making in the course.  If you have a question or an urgent matter to discuss, visiting the Chat Room during your instructor's scheduled e-Office time is an expedient way of contacting her. The Chat Room is a public forum, so matters of a private or sensitive nature should be communicated using the "Private Message" tool in Etudes-NG (DISCUSSIONS AND MESSAGES page).

Note: Students with a verified disability who may need reasonable accommodation(s) for this class are encouraged to notify the instructor and contact the Office of Special Services (CH 109, 323/953-4000, X2270) as soon as possible. All information will remain confidential.
