What
is an online class?
An online class is a course delivered
to you electronically via the Internet and email. If you
have your own computer and the MS Word 2007 program, you
can complete your work at your convenience anytime, day
or night. You will also be required to come
on campus once for an orientation at the beginning of the
semester and three other times during the semester for testing. Please read the
rest of the FAQs on this page for details.

Will I be
successful in an online class?

If you can answer "yes" to all of these questions, you have an excellent
chance at being successful in an online class:
 | Are you a good reader? |
 | Can you follow directions? |
 | Are you disciplined? |
 | Are you a self-starter? |
 | Can you install software? |
 | Can you use an email program? |
 | Can you use a Web browser and change
setting options? |
 | Do you know how to "multitask?" (work
with two or more programs and open and switch from one to
another?) |
 | Are you comfortable using a computer system? |
 | To be successful in this
particular course, you should be able to type at least 30
wam by touch (without looking at your hands). |

Do I need my own
computer and software?

 |
If you want to take CAOT 84 from
your home or office, you must have the software and hardware
listed below. |
 | If you don't have a computer, you can
take the class on campus using the computers in the Computer Applications and Office Technologies
labs in
Da Vinci
Hall 203, 205, 202, or 204 during
open lab hours
or in the
All-College Computer Lab. To
do so, you may use your LACC or other email account.
Upon enrollment, students are automatically given LACC email
accounts. Click
here and then scroll down to the "LACC E-mail Account"
section for access to your LACC email account. |
Software:
If you are working at home,
you must have the software listed below installed on your computer.
 |
Microsoft Word 2007 for the PC (one component of the MS
Office Basic 2007 package). |
 |
An email account--either
your personal or assigned LACC email account (all
students receive one upon enrollment). |
 |
A reliable Internet connection. |
 |
Microsoft Windows XP
(with Service Pack 2) or Vista. |
 | An updated virus software program. Click
here
for information on virus software. |
If you do not have MS Office 2007 on your home
computer, you may purchase this software by
going to (1)
The Ultimate Steal at
http://www.microsoft.com/student/discounts/theultimatesteal-us/default.aspx
(to purchase MS Office Ultimate 2007 for $59.95), (2) the
Foundation for California Community Colleges at
http://www.journeyed.com/homeSelect.asp?SKW=FCCCHOME OR
http://www.collegebuys.org,
where
a variety of software packages are available at greatly
discounted prices for students.
College ID is required at the above sites.
Note: When
you enroll in any class at LACC, you are automatically assigned
an e-mail account, which you will need to order your software.
Click
here for
information on your LACC academic e-mail account.
Microsoft offers free
60-day Office Standard Edition 2007 Trial Software that
includes Word 2007. Trial versions contain all the
functionality of the regular version, but can only be
used for a limited time. After the trial expires, the
software goes into reduced functionality mode. You
continue to view and print files, but you cannot modify
existing files or create and save new ones. Click
here
for details and download.
You may also come to LACC to use the computers in DH 202, 203, 204, or 205;
if you do so, please enroll in CAOT 64, which will give you 1
elective unit of credit upon attending a total of 32 hours
(check the number of hours with the instructor) in our labs at
the end of the semester. To enroll, please enquire at the
Business Department Office on the third floor of the Cesar
Chavez Administration Building. If you find that you are
better suited for a traditional CAOT 84 class that meets on
campus, click
here to check the LACC Schedule of Classes for additional
sections of CAOT 84 offered this semester.
Hardware: If you are working at home,
the recommended minimum system requirements for MS Word

$20 per unit per semester
(subject to change) for a student who is a California resident. Foreign
students with F-1 visas or out-of-state students pay additional non-resident fees.

Can I enroll in
CAOT 84 Online after the orientation meeting?

You can add anytime after the first day of class with my
approval as long as you are willing to put in extra time to
catch up with all activities completed to date within one
week's time. Send me an email message at
morimocs@lacitycollege.edu
for details.

Will I need to come in person to the LACC
campus to complete any part of this course?
Unless you have made other arrangements with me, yes.
You will be required to attend a mandatory orientation
meeting (details are on the Home page for this course) in
addition to coming to campus to take tests throughout
the semester. Please email the instructor if
this is a critical issue for you.

What should I do after I enroll?

After you
have registered in this course, you should complete (click on
the link at the top of the Home page) and
submit the Student Questionnaire and email your instructor to
confirm that you will attend the orientation meeting.
You should also purchase the textbook (described in the
Course Outline), install the Word 2007 program on your
computer if necessary. Because the orientation meeting is at
the end of Week 2 of the semester, you should begin reading the introductory pages
in the Preface as well as read and do pages WD 2-WD 21 in Chapter 1. Bring your textbook
as well as the saved Chapter 1 file (saved on page WD 21) to
the orientation meeting.

How do I get started?
On the first day of the semester, go to the Etudes-NG Gateway at
http://etudes-ng.fhda.edu/portal (or simply go back to
the Home Page of this Web site and click on the "Etudes-NG"
link near the top of the page).
-
In the Navigation Bar at
the left side of your screen, first click on "System
Requirements" to verify that your computer meets the
configuration requirements for Etudes-NG. If not,
make the needed changes in your Windows settings.
-
Next click on "Login Help" in
the Navigation Bar. Under #2, find and click on "Los
Angeles City College Login" and read the student login
information for our campus. Write down your "username"
and "password;" both items will be needed to login to our
course site in Etudes-NG. (Note: The Etudes-NG
site for this course becomes available for student access the first day of the semester
if you are an enrolled
student. If you just enrolled by add permit, you must wait two days
before your name is added to Etudes-NG.) Close the LACC Login site (by clicking the button at the bottom of the
page OR using the Windows close box--upper right corner of
your screen). Doing so will return you to the
Etudes-NG portal.
-
At the Etudes-NG portal
(gateway), key in your username and
password in the upper right corner of the window. Click
on the "Login" button. Notice that when you first enter
Etudes-NG, you are in your own "Workspace" area.
To the right of the Workspace tab, there should
be a tab for each of the other online classes you are
enrolled in using Etudes-NG as the course management
software. To enter
our CAOT 84 class, you must click on the appropriate
tab--similar to "LACC CAO 84,
1039 CM FO9" tab. Peruse our Etudes-NG classroom by clicking on
each of the Navigation buttons at the left side of the window,
beginning with "Schedule" and ending with "Site Info."
-
Click on
Modules in the Navigation Bar and begin at the top.
READ EVERY PAGE CAREFULLY. After reading my
Chapter 1 notes, minimize Etudes-NG and your browser.
-
Launch MS
Word on your computer and open your textbook to Chapter
1. Begin reading and following the instructions in
the textbook to complete the chapter project. Save
your project to a
disk or a jump (flash) drive.
-
After the
project for Chapter 1 has been completed,
log into Etudes-NG, click on Modules to check
for which of the end-of-chapter Student Assignments your
instructor has assigned. Click on the
assignments link in the Navigation Bar and
scroll through the list to find the Chapter 1 assignment
link. Click on the link to read the specific
directions for this assignment and note the due date and
time. Complete these
assignments in Word and save them to a disk or jump (flash) drive.
-
The next
step is to click on the Assignments link in the
Navigation Bar in Etudes-NG and to submit each file
individually, at its own link, "as an attachment"
before the due date.
View Etudes-NG Tour 4 (in the section below) if you have
questions on how to submit your assignments.
-
After the
Chapter 1 project and assignments have been submitted,
return to Modules and read your instructor's
notes for Chapter 2 before beginning Chapter 2 in the
textbook. Follow the procedures above for each
chapter in the textbook.
During the mandatory orientation meeting at
the beginning of the semester (check the Home page for the date, time,
and place), we will discuss the Etudes-NG CAOT 84 "classroom" in
further detail (where to locate the assignments, determine their due
dates, how to submit
them, how to do the "required" discussion postings, how the
Etudes-NG "chat room" will serve as your instructor's "virtual
office," course testing procedures, how your final grade is
calculated, etc.)

What are the rules of student conduct
and the academic honor code?
It is expected that
students will pursue their studies here at LACC with
honesty and integrity. Students are expected to
complete their own assignments. Anyone caught cheating
(not submitting their OWN work) or
plagiarizing will undergo a process that could result in
severe and undesirable consequences. Click
here
to see the LACC rules of student conduct. It is your
responsibility to know the rules and abide by them.
