2. Do I need my own
computer and FrontPage software at home?

-
If you sign up for this class, you are
expected to to complete your assignments either at home or in the CAOT computer labs by
enrolling in CAOT 64 and using the computers in the Computer Applications
and Office Technologies labs in
Da Vinci Hall
203, 205, 202, or 204 during
open lab hours.
You may choose to work at home on your own computer as long as
you understand that technical support will NOT
be provided for your personal computer. If you are experiencing technical
problems at home, you may NOT work at home and no special accommodations
will be made. It will be your responsibility to complete your work in our
CAOT labs.
-
FrontPage can be very complicated, technically
speaking. That said, most students who work at home do not experience
technical problems. Virus problems with our LACC servers can occur and
other technical issues may occur that have nothing to do with student
error. If that is the case, I will always make accommodations for
technical problems with our LACC server or our LACC labs that might arise
during the semester.
-
Here’s a
link to try FrontPage online:
http://www.microsoft.com/products/info/default.aspx?view=22&pcid=fab9617a-57ff-4789-9397-6dac071b19b0.
It appears that there is no longer a free trial version, so sign up for
CAOT 64 to complete homework in our labs.
-
If you have your own computer with Internet
access and FrontPage software at home and are not experiencing any
technical problems, you may work at home. You
will also need MS Word to complete some of your assignments.
-
Here's a link for information on new Web
page design software coming from Microsoft around 2008:
http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/features/2007/feb06/02-15Designer.mspx
"Microsoft is introducing a new tool, Microsoft Office SharePoint
Designer 2007, for building SharePoint applications and designing
SharePoint sites. This new product – part of the full 2007 Microsoft
Office lineup announced today – will join Microsoft Expression Web
Designer, the next-generation tool for designing dynamic, standard-based
Web sites, to deliver a complete set of tools for Web design and
development."
-
Go to the Foundation for California
Community Colleges at
http://www.journeyed.com/homeSelect.asp?SKW=FCCCHOME, which
sells a variety of software packages greatly discounted
for students.
3. Do I need
an e-mail account?

You will be submitting all your assignments to
me via e-mail or by using the Internet, so you must have an e-mail
account and check it regularly! Hotmail,
Yahoo, Juno, and
ZDNet are
popular free e-mail providers.
You will also need to use your
LACC student e-mail account for several
tutorials to do things like save form results, receive notification of
discussion group posts, etc. Here is information about your LACC e-mail
account, which is automatically created for any student enrolled at LACC:
Note:
Your LACC e-mail address begins with your
userID (also known as your alias) followed by @email2.lacitycollege.edu.
The userID is composed of:
- First
2
letters of your first name;
- First
2
letters of your last name;
- Last
5
digits of your student identification number.
Accordingly, a student named John
Smith with a student identification number of 123-45-6789
would have a userID of josm56789. His e-mail address
would be josm56789@email2.lacitycollege.edu
Your 4-digit
password is composed of two numbers representing the month and
two numbers representing the day of your birthday. For
example, if John Smith was born on January 2, his
initial password would be 0102.
| To check your
LACC Student e-mail, click
here
to go to the LACC Web site. Click Student Services in the
left panel. On the Services page, click Student E-Mail
Service--Log-In. |
|
 |
|
In the User name box, type
lacc_uia\ followed
directly by your user name just like you do to open your
Web sites (for example,
lacc_uia\josm56789). Fill in
the password (your birthday) in the Password box, and you should gain access.

there.

8.
How do I complete weekly assignments, and when are
they due?

You will follow the directions each week under the Homework
and Extra Credit links for your assignments. Most assignments are submitted
by sending me the URL to your Garden Grill Web site published and saved on
the LACC server or to the homework.htm page where you copy and paste your
practice test results. I can access these Web sites on any computer with the
Internet and so can you. No assignments are accepted late! Most assignments
are due Sunday by noon in; however, check the weekly assignment sheets for
exact due dates.
9.
How do I e-mail my weekly assignments?

Open the email account you use for our class and follow the
directions there to send an e-mail to me. The subject line
must begin with your first and last name in
standard capitalization, a comma, followed by the last 4 numbers of your
student ID and the assignment name. You can find the assignment name on the
weekly assignment sheets under the Homework link. Because I can receive up to 100 e-mail
messages in a day, a standard subject line must be used to sort your
messages. You are responsible for saving all e-mail messages from me in
order to resolve any grading disputes, etc.

13. What do
former students have to say about this course?

Tom Bell: It was an informative class,
the syllabus was well laid out, very clear, and at just the right pace, and
it was well taught. Be prepared to do the required reading assignments. Be
sure to do the ALL the required homework assignments, turned in ON TIME. I
would also highly recommend doing all the Extra Credit assignments you
possibly can. It never hurts.
Anonymous: I honestly cannot think of
any way in which you could improve upon what you are already doing in this
course. Because the textbook is very detailed and comprehensive, our
demonstrations and explanations of the chapter material were key to helping
us grasp the material. I like the fact that you stressed that we as students
should try to understand the overall concepts in your demonstrations; the
details are in the text. You applied just enough pressure on us to keep up
with the Sunny and Garden tutorials every week and as long as we did these
tutorials, we didn't get "lost." I liked everything about the course!
14. What is the best
strategy to succeed in this course?

In this or any class, you need to develop
a strategy to complete your assignments successfully. Before attempting any
homework assignment, here is what you should be doing:
-
Prepare in advance—read the
chapter before I lecture and work through the chapter tutorials after the
class if you didn’t understand the steps.
-
Use your Assignment Sheet—print
the Assignment Sheet and cross off each and every step as you complete it.
-
Use the steps from the chapter
tutorials—don’t assume that the steps in the Assignment Sheet are
going to tell you "exactly" how to do each step. The steps are purposely
generic in order to make you "think" through the steps and search for
answers on your own. To balance this, the tutorials in the book ARE
designed to be specific so that you have a reference when you need help.
These specific steps with a gray background are the first place to look
for answers. The purple boxes provide you with generic steps.
-
Use the textbook index—look up
your desired keyword ("frames" or whatever feature is causing problems) in
the index in the back of your book and go to the appropriate page.
-
Use FrontPage Help—if you still
need help, type a keyword in the Help box in FrontPage and start
reading. Although I know this can be frustrating and/or time consuming, it
really IS how you learn—and, yes, it DOES take time.
-
"Right-click" over the feature you
are studying—sometimes the answer is a click away.
-
Use the Find (Ctrl-F) feature in
your browser—type the desired keyword on your Assignment Sheet page or
on the FrontPage Tips page.
-
Ask for help—ask an
instructional assistant, student assistant, or me for help. I'm an e-mail
away.
