Orientation to Web Page Design
60% of you are likely to earn an A or B.
The majority of those who earned anything lower than
a B had poor attendance
didn't submit assignments regularly, if at all, and didn't prepare
for objective tests.

Case: Sunshine Landscape & Garden Center;
owner, Brett Kizer; you are a landscape designer and will manage the
Sunshine Web site development and teach Brett about FrontPage. You will
work on the Garden Web site for Sunshine Landscape & Garden Center
continuously throughout the semester. This Web site is never graded.
Experiment freely. When we move on to a new tutorial, I will publish the
correct solution to your URL so you're ready to begin each time with a
correct Web site.

NOTE: This "pointing figure"
icon indicates a valuable tip related to FrontPage that is not covered
in your textbook. These special tips are found throughout this course
Web site as a convenience to you. You might want to print them and cut
and paste them into your book on the page indicated. If you click the
FrontPage Tips link on the link bar on the home page, you can print
them out all at once.

view the Getting Started Task Pane when
it is not visible, click View, Task Pane. If you want it to be visible
always, click Tools, Options,

Student Questionnaire
Go to the
Questionnaire page and submit it. I
will use the form results to add you to my e-mail address book. You
will learn to create a form like this later in the semester. When you
are finished, clear your information as explained below.
To
clear a form for privacy after filling
in the Questionnaire, do this in Internet Explorer: Tools,
Internet Options, Content tab, AutoComplete, Clear Forms, OK, OK.
p.
16, Step 4: We will create the Garden Web site using a floppy disk
in the A drive as a temporary storage area. Later, we will be
publishing this Web and all your Webs to our LACC server. In the
Browse box, type A:\garden.
To
rename a Web If you accidentally
published your Web with the wrong name, do this:
Open the Web and click Tools, Web Settings; in the Web
name box, change the name and click OK.
p. 17,
Step 5: FrontPage names the home page index.htm (not
default.htm) on our server.
p.
19, Step 5. To change compatibility so all FP features are
supported: Tools, Page Options, Authoring tab.
Under Browsers, select Microsoft Internet Explorer only,
OK. If you choose something other than this, FrontPage will disable
unsupported features.
p.
19, Step 5. To change your default Web browser to
MS Internet Explorer so that features like marquees and background sound
will be supported: Close FrontPage, and open Internet Explorer. Click
Tools, Internet Options, Programs tab, check Internet
Explorer should check to see whether it is the default browser, OK;
close Internet Explorer and open FrontPage; click File, Preview
in Browser, select Microsoft Internet Explorer, Preview.
p. 21,
Step 1: After you create the one-page Web, remember to double-click index.htm
to open the home page for editing.

23. Change the headings on p. 23 to read "Inserting
the Contents of a File in a Web Page." Adding these words should
remind you that these steps don't insert the file itself into the Web
site. It is more like a copy/paste of the contents of the file into the
page. Note the Reference Window, which gives you a list of
"generic" steps to complete a task in FrontPage.
p.
23, Step 2. To display file extensions in Windows
Explorer: It can be important to be able to view file extensions
when you browse to files outside of FrontPage. This requires changing your
Windows Explorer settings.
Right-click the Windows Start button and click Explore to
open Windows Explorer; open any directory with files in it; click
Tools, Folder Options; click the View tab; in
the Advanced Settings box, uncheck Hide file extensions for
known file types; click OK.
p.
23, Step 2:
To see
my
favorite
settings for Windows, Windows Explorer, Internet Explorer, and
Word: Click here
and enjoy. I use these settings and find that my work is easier and
more efficient in all Office programs when I use them.
p. 23, Step
4.
When the contents of List.doc are inserted and converted to
HTML code, the Word formatting is NOT brought in. Inserting file contents
in this way is similar to Edit, Paste Special, Normal paragraphs.
p. 27.
Using the smart tag choice "Keep Text Only" is the same as
Edit, Paste Special, Normal paragraphs. You can try copying and
pasting this line without any formatting into the home page rather
than typing it and then delete it.

your user name and password,
and your Web site will open.
- Formatting a Web Page, p. 31
p. 37, Step 3:
Pressing Shift-Enter to create a single-space
in a Web site can cause problems in certain situations. If you want
different paragraph formatting such as centering the first line and
left-aligning the second line, you cannot use Shift-Enter. You
would instead create a 2-row table and insert one line in the first row
and the second line in the second row so that you can apply different
paragraph formatting to each row. Another instance where using Shift-Enter is a bad idea is when you have two consecutive
hyperlinks—one on the first line and a different one on the second line.
The hyperlinks can often malfunction because FrontPage cannot
distinguish where the first hyperlink ends and the second one begins. In
this situation, it is better to create a 2-row table structure with one
hyperlink in each row.
p. 38. To
insert a special character, Em Dash: Type
Alt+0151 on the numeric keypad. This (--) is a regular dash typed with
hyphens. This (—) is an em dash.
