Daily Routine

  • Log in and open Internet Explorer to our class Web site at http://caot.lacitycollege.edu/112/.
  • Click the Assignments button and open the current week's assignment.
  • Open FrontPage.
  • Open your textbook to the appropriate tutorial.
  • Bring a printout of your weekly assignment sheet and have it on your desk.

Tutorial 1, Creating a Web Site (cont'd), pp. 45-56

Session 1.3, pp. 45-56

  • Understating Hypertext Markup Language, p. 45
  • Viewing the HTML Document That Creates a Web Page, p. 47

Click here to view a Microsoft Office Online Demo: "Cut your work in half with the new Split view."

p. 50: To view HTML codes, choose View, Reveal Tags or press Ctrl+/. Preview view is NOT reliable—don't use it.

p. 51. Interesting search engines:
http://www.google.com/
(finds pages based on number of hits—try Keyboarding Online LACC or Web Page Design LACC)
http://www.ixquick.com/
Finds almost anything. I use this to check for cheating, so beware.

p. 51. Effective META tag keywords and page titles. Here are some tips researched by a former student on the effective use of keywords and page titles.

  • Always use your primary keywords in the title tag at least one or more times.

  • Try to place your primary keywords at the start of the tag.

  • Avoid listing the same word multiple times in a row since some engines may penalize for this. Instead, use the keyword multiple times, but separate them by other words in your text.

  • Use the longer form and the plural form of a keyword when possible. For example, if you use marketing in your Title tag, a search on marketing or market will yield a match on most engines. However, words like companies will not always yield a match on company since company is not an exact "substring" of companies. In these cases you'll want to try and use both forms of the word.

  • Use upper- and lowercase lettering for keywords in general. Example: Blue Widgets are sold here!

  • Longer titles are generally better than shorter ones. However, shorter ones can be used if you need to better emphasize a keyword that is not ranking.

  • Make your title interesting and "compelling" to readers to convince them why they should click there.

p. 52, Step 4: You can try copying and pasting this line as the description in the Value text box rather than typing it: The Texas Hill Country's premiere full-service landscaping center, specializing in rock work, irrigation systems, and landscape design.

p. 53, Step 7: You can try copying and pasting these words as the keywords in the Value text box rather than typing it: Sunshine, Texas Hill Country, garden, gardening, flower, plant, herb, landscaping, landscape design, rock work, irrigation

Review Assignments, p. 57. Do together without printing.

Demonstration—Posting to a FrontPage Newsgroup

p. 56. Newsgroups are public forums like a virtual "classroom" where anyone is free to ask questions, and anyone with an answer to the question can respond. Click here to go to the newsgroups online. Under Community Newsgroups, click Office, FrontPage, FrontPage Client.

User Name and Password for LACC Server

Each of you will be assigned a unique directory on our server to use for publishing your Web sites so that both of us will be able to view it anywhere we have an Internet connection and work on it if FrontPage is installed. You must know your student userID and password. Write them down once you figure them out!!

The user name is composed of:

  1. First 2 letters of your first name;
  2. First 2 letters of your last name;
  3. Last 5 digits of your student identification number.

Accordingly, a student named John Smith with a student identification number of 123-45-6789 would have a user name of josm56789. You must precede this with lacc_uia\ so John Smith would fill in lacc_uia\josm56789 for his user name.

The student account password is composed of the two numbers that represent the month and day of the student’s birth. For example, if John Smith was born on August 31, his initial password would be 0831. Check Remember my password to save your User name in the drop-down list. Your password will not be remembered.

Demonstration—publishing Web sites

Refer to Tutorial 6, Publishing a Web Site, pp. 376-383 for detailed steps on publishing a  Web site.

To publish garden from the A: to http://ca112.lacitycollege.edu/ca112axx/garden (our server), do this:

  1. With garden open, click File, Publish Site; in the Remote Web site location box, paste http://ca112.lacitycollege.edu/ca112axx/garden, and change xx to your directory number, which I will assign in class; click OK.

Note: The remote Web site is the target Web site, and it can be either a server-based Web or a disk-based Web. The Local Web site is the source Web that is open in FrontPage.
Note: p. 379, Step 7. Click the Remote Web Site View button, Publishing tab. the next time you publish this Web, these settings will become the default; if you want to change the default after publishing, review and change these settings as desired.

  1. FrontPage will prompt you that a Web site does not exist at that location. Answer Yes to allow FrontPage to create a Web site at that location.

  2. Click Publish Web site and you're done.

Renaming a Web: If you accidentally published your Web with the wrong name, do this to correct the name: Open the Web and click Tools, Site Settings; in the Web name box, change the name and click OK.

p. 377, Step 4. To publish a Web site to a disk-based Web: From the Remote Web Site tab, click File System. Click Browse and browse to a folder you created previously with the desired Web site name, and click OK. if your Web won't publish, go to the target destination outside of FrontPage and create a regular folder with the same name as the Web site first then try publishing again.

p. 379, Step 8. Remote Web Site Properties: the next time you publish this Web, FrontPage will default to these settings including the destination; review these settings when publishing to be sure they're the ones you want.

Publishing Garden Web Solutions to the Server

NOTE: This "gold key figure" icon alerts you that I will publish the correct solution (answer key) to garden to your directory on our server. This action will replace and overwrite garden. To keep garden as it is now, follow the steps below. We'll do this together the first time so that you'll understand the process.

garden Web site solution: At the end of each tutorial, I will publish to the garden Web so that you will always have the correct solution for the next tutorial.  You will find it at http://ca112.lacitycollege.edu/ca112axx/garden in which xx will be replaced by your assigned publishing number. You will then be ready to open garden as it should be after the Review Assignment on p. 61 and continue working on it in Tutorial 2. As always, the best way to learn to use FrontPage is to practice; therefore, publish the garden Web site you have been working on in class to http://ca112.lacitycollege.edu/ca112axx/gardenPractice, open gardenPractice, and continue working on it as desired.

Case Problem 1, Buffalo, p. 58.

Case Problem 2, Garden Grill, p. 60. These are usually started in class and finished for homework.

NOTE: This "smiling computer" icon alerts you that you will have lab time to work on your homework and get individual help from me and my assistant.

Case Problem 2, Garden Grill. Start your homework today in class—see the assignment below. It's an excellent time to get individual help—don't be afraid to ask for help. Each time you see this computer icon at the left, you know you can plan on lab time in class.

Demonstration—Submitting assignments via e-mail

Homework

E-mail assignments with this e-mail icon to me no later than Sunday at noon unless otherwise announced. No assignments are accepted late. In all e-mail messages, the subject line should be Your Name, last 4 numbers of your student ID, project ID.

T1WS, 26 pts.: Case 2, Garden Grill. On p. 60, read the introductory paragraph only and then follow the steps listed below rather than those in your book. When you are finished, your home page should have the information arranged and formatted exactly like this screen shot. I really check for typos, formatting errors, and attention to detail; so examine your home page carefully.

When you are finished, your home page should have the information arranged and formatted exactly like this screen shot. I check carefully for typos, formatting errors, and attention to detail; so examine your home page in detail! The date and time will be different on your Web site since you are using a date and time field that will change the date and time to the last date of edit.

Note: Data disk files to help you create the Web site at home for these case problem can be found at C:\My Documents\CAOT 112\Tutorial.01\Case2, or click here for steps to download to download them from the Internet.

Step 1: Use the One Page Web Site template to create the grill Web at http://ca112.lacitycollege.edu/ca112axx/grill. Click here to review steps for publishing to the server. Be very careful when you create the Web to use the correct address, and remember to replace the "xx" in the address with your own directory number!!

Step 2: Insert grill.doc into the home page from the Tutorial.01\Case2 folder.

Step 3: Check the spelling on the home page and correct any misspellings.

Step 4: Change to Split view. In the Web page, click to the left of the sentence that begins "Garden Grill is a premier . . ." and press Enter.

Step 5: Return to Design view, create a new paragraph at the top of the home page, and center and type Welcome to Garden Grill in the new paragraph.

Step 6: Create a new paragraph above the heading from step 7. Start Word and copy the text from linkbar.doc in the Tutorial.01\Case2 folder. Close Word and paste the copied text on the new paragraph centered at the top of the home page. Click the Keep Text Only option, and change the pasted text to Normal style.

Step 7: Change the font color of the link bar text to purple, bold, Times New Roman. Change Welcome to Garden Grill to the Heading 3 style and change the font to red Comic Sans MS.

Step 8: In a new paragraph at the bottom of the page, insert a copyright symbol, type a space, type the current year, and the company name. Press Shift+Enter to create a new line. Type Last updated followed by a space, and insert a date field to indicate when the page was last edited. Format the date with the day of the week and the full date with the month spelled out. Include the time.

To insert a date and time field: Insert, Date and Time; check Date this page was last edited and choose the desired date and time formats as shown in the screen shot of the finished home page.

Step 9: Change the font of text of the text you created in step 8 to italic, 10-point, Arial.

Step 10. Create appropriate META description and keyword tags and include them in the home page.

Look up meta tags in the index of your book and follow all steps to insert both a description meta tag and a keywords meta tag. This is the one step in this assignment that most students get wrong and it's very time consuming for both of us. If you will just use your book and follow the steps exactly, you'll do fine on this.

Remember that the description META tag is supposed to summarize the Web site's content. This description is what visitor's will see when they use a search engine to find the site. Make sure it is well written. For example, "Garden Grill Restaurant is . . ." and then finish the thought. The keyword META tags are words a visitor might think of typing into a search box to find the site. Caution—be sure to create your META tags in the User variables (not System variables) section at the bottom of the Content tab window. Look at the introductory paragraphs for this case for ideas.

Note: Data disk files to help you create the Web site at home for these case problem can be found at C:\My Documents\CAOT 112\Tutorial.01, or click here to see steps to download them from the Internet.

Demonstration—Submitting assignments via e-mail

  • Creating an e-mail account.
  • Using e-mail to send an attachment.
  • Always submit your e-mail with the subject line as follows: Your Name, Your ID (the last 4 numbers of your student ID), Project ID. For example, Subject:  Amy Sirott, 5555, T1PT

When you are finished with all steps for grill, open grill in Internet Explorer. Click inside the Address box and press Ctrl-C to copy the URL. Open your e-mail client and paste the URL into the body of the message. You should see a hyperlink to your Web site appear. The e-mail subject line should be Your Name, last 4 digits of your student ID, T1WS.

  • Your URL should be http://ca112.lacitycollege.edu/ca112axx/grill/ with "xx" changed to your directory number. If your URL does not automatically change to a hyperlink, check your email settings. In Hotmail in your New Message window, you have to click the Tools button, and click Rich-Text Editor ON to turn on the editor. When it is set properly, it will change to Rich-Text Editor OFF.

When you receive your grade for T1WS, open Grill and correct all errors as noted in my e-mail to you before beginning T2WS. Any errors that are not corrected will result in another deduction in T2WS. Reply to my e-mail with the list of corrections as soon as you have fixed all problems. I will make note of it and you are then ready to continue to the next tutorial. I will use the list of corrections as a checklist to be sure you made all changes.
