Campus LAN Installation  Return to top of page

To access the LAN Installation of GDP from your office computer at work, make a copy of our current shortcut to Keyboarding 1, 2, 3. Right-click the current GDP shortcut on your desktop, and click Send To, Desktop (create shortcut).  Right-click the new shortcut, click Properties, and change the path to \\10.24.1.1\gdp\gdp.exe.

To install the Campus version of GDP at home to practice with the software, use the Quick Start steps below.

Quick Start: Next; I accept the terms of the license agreement, Yes, install with Instructor Management; Next; Next; Next; Next; Finish.

Note: Browse to setup.exe if the CD doesn't launch automatically.

When you complete the installation, an Irwin Keyboarding program group opens on the desktop with this icon. Right-click the icon and send a shortcut to the Desktop. Rename the shortcut to CAOT 1 2 3.

LAN Class Setup Return to top of page

Launch GDP, and click OK to create a class the first time. Click Options, Instructor Options, New Instructor. Type the Instructor Options password (see me to get it) and click OK.

Fill in your information on the Add New Instructor screen, and click Save. The password you fill in here is your own private password you will be prompted for from now on each time you enter Instructor Management. An e-mail address is optional. If you fill it in, your students will be able to e-mail you from GDP without entering an address.

Select your name, click OK, and type your new password. Click the LAN Gradebook tab, Create New Class. Fill in your course name, leave the defaults for the gradebook as is unless you want to create a custom gradebook, and make your choices for student data storage. We save use Classes in subdirectory. Click Save.

Click Settings. Under Instructor Settings, change everything as desired. Check Proofreading Viewer if you want this feature. Uncheck Live Update as I will be in charge of updating the software for our department. The URL for the Campus Web site should be whatever URL you want to access when you click Campus Web Site in the top row of Instructor Management. I recommend pointing it to http://caot.lacitycollege.edu/001T/. The URL for GDP should be set to whatever URL you want your students to access when they click Web in GDP. I recommend pointing it to the new Student Web Site at http://gdpstudent.mhhe.com/ if you are going to post materials there or want students to access annotations and grades from home.

Under Class Settings tab, fill in as desired. Below is what I use:

Standalone Installation Return to top of page

Quick Start: Next; I accept the terms of the license agreement, No, install without Instructor Management; Next; Save Student Data on floppy disk A:; Next; Next; Finish.

Note: This same installation may be used in the ACCL.

This Standalone installation should be used by traditional students or online students working at LACC when the network is down. Click here for steps the student would take if the network goes down. Use the Campus Version CD for the Standalone installation, and make these choices:

After installation, go to Start, Programs, Irwin Keyboarding, and click GDP Standalone to launch GDP. (Note: Do not add an icon to the Desktop as this will be a choice used infrequently.) From the Welcome screen, click Options, Instructor Options, and enter the password. Click Settings, Instructor Settings tab and use these settings:

Go to Class Settings and use these settings:

To update the Standalone installation: Open Instructor Management (C:\GDP\GDPIM.exe). When you select an instructor name and log on or click New Instructor and add yourself as an instructor, GDP will automatically check for updates and you will be prompted to install the update if one is available.

ACCL Installation  Return to top of page

The keyboarding software at the ACCL uses the same network shortcut we do, so students can continue working there seamlessly.

Troubleshooting   Return to top of page

Refer all support issues to www.mhhe.com/support. Software Hotline: 800-331-5094; Felix Widjaja, felix_widjaja@mcgraw-hill.com (Arlene's contact; talk to Arlene before contacting Felix at 1-800-634-3963 ext. 5473.)

Go to the Troubleshooting page on the Keyboarding Web site at http://gdpkeyboarding.com/Troubleshoot.htm for the most current list of issues and resolutions.

Testing on the LAN  Return to top of page

You might want to create an additional class reserved for testing. You might want to name the class with your last name followed by your section number and Test. For example, mine would be Zimmerly 1013 Test. In your class settings, you could require a password to log-on and you set the password privately and enter it private on the day of testing. Change any other settings as desired. You could chose to store data on a disk and pass out disks, but I recommend keeping it simple and storing data on the LAN and using a confidential password.

When students take a test, you or the instructional assistant could go to each station to type in a confidential password the student should not see. Using a confidential password protects the integrity of the test so that students cannot see their Portfolio or anything else when the test is over without knowing the password.

LAN Students Working at Home  Return to top of page

Some of your students might want to work at home to complete homework or for extra practice. Refer your students to http://caot.lacitycollege.edu/001T  to the GDP at Home link for details on installation and importing and exporting their work from home to school and back again.

Note: If you want to use data disks to store data for your LAN classes, create a LAN class with data saved to the A: In this configuration, the student uses the same data disk between home and school without using the Import/Export feature, but students have to keep track of data disks.

Technique Demonstration   Return to top of page
