Deep Freeze Information

How does Deep Freeze work? Deep Freeze 2000 XP restores the computer to its original settings whenever the computer is rebooted. If a virus infects a system during the day, rebooting should clear it out. Any files or programs added after Deep Freeze will be deleted each time a reboot takes  place. If you or your students need to save files, Kaleung is reserving 1 gigabyte of space on the server as a virtual drive. It will appear that you are saving to individual computers when in fact you are saving to the hard drive on the server. All instructors who have data files used in their course or who have any need for any special settings or programs in any profile must contact Arlene Zimmerly, Lab Coordinator, at azimmerly@comcast.net immediately.

Kaleung set up a VLAN for 303, 202, 203, 204, and 205 to be used exclusively by our department, which takes us out of the central campus network server and should make our keyboarding software run faster and enable us or him to image all our labs. It takes about 15 minutes to create the disk image from Station 26 in DH 202 and about 3 hours to deploy the image. Everything is replaced except for IP and computer name. After imaging, run \Windows\sidgen.exe on each station--takes a few seconds. In F03, Kaleung imaged all the workstations in 204. Use the shortcut for keyboarding in 204 so drives won't have to be mapped. Aaron (2042) helped us image S04.

Imaging

David J, 5/19/05: assigned master computers for imaging in DH203, 204, 205.
Those are No. 24 in DH203, No. 17 in DH204 and No. 1 in DH205.
The image in DH202 and DH303 will be based on the image of DH203 with some changes.

I installed a clean copy of Windows XP on NTFS partition on each of these computers.
I also installed:
    Win Service Pack 2
    MS Office 2003
    MS Frontpage 2003
    Macromedia Flash Player
    Macromedia Shockwave Player
    Microsoft Windows Media Player 10
    Real Player 10
    Java Runtime Environment 1.4.2
I also have a shortcut for GDP10 on the desktop.

Note: Adobe Acrobat reader should also be installed.

Master Computers

This computer also provides the image for the teacher's station in DH 203.

Peter fixes computer for disabled students in 203. Teacher's station is imaged off of 204 master. The script running in 203 was deleted from from the registry files on the master computer (#29), so after the imaging of the lab all the computers will have the same configuration. Now you can set the date and time on the master. (David J.)

  2. Choose Operations > Copy File To or click the Copy File To icon on the Console toolbar.
  3. Select either the Copy File or Copy Directory option.

J Directory Naming Conventions

bulletWe will use the following directory naming conventions for class data files as follows: C:\My Documents\Course Number Data Files. Always use 3 digits for any course number (001, 002, etc.) For example, my FrontPage files would be named C:\My Documents\112 Data Files. If two teachers have the same class, type the instructor name after the course number. This path should minimize browsing for our students.
