Master Computer for Imaging

DH 204 Only the Dell computers can be re-imaged weekly. There is hardware incompatibility with the others, so Linda must update the profiles on the non-Dell machines manually.
DH 203 There are two master computers in Row 4 next to the mirrored wall. The computer directly next to the wall is the server and is always left on. The computer next to it is the master computer. Avoid having any students sit there unless a class is full.

Imaging

Every Friday afternoon, all workstations in all labs will be imaged, which means that the master files from the master computer in each lab will "erase" or "overwrite" everything on each workstation. This imaging will not delete any instructor files or student files stored in the Public server in the directories described under Instructor Files—Private, Instructor Files—Shared, or Student Files.

All software settings will be restored as YOU set them up originally in YOUR profile. The imaging overwrites any customizations you or your students have made in any of the software programs. Therefore, if you need to keep any software customizations, remember to change the profile for your course on the master computer in DH 203. It is the last computer in the last row next to the windows and the mirror.

Windows Profiles

Current Windows Profiles: Our current Windows profiles are shown below (CAOT Department profile is last and hidden). Software may only be installed under the CAOT 1 2 3 profile at workstations or of course under any profile at the master computer:

Generic CAOT Department Profile: Most instructors do not need to have a unique Windows profile. These instructors will have their students use the generic CAOT Department profile at the bottom of the list. This profile has been designed with customized Windows settings, Favorites, etc., that were used successfully last semester. All input for changes is welcomed.

Custom Profile: If you need a unique course profile, Jorge will created it. Courses like CAOT 112 and COAT 98 would be likely to need a unique profile. After your profile is created, you must open that profile and optimize/customize Windows, Windows Explorer, Word, etc., to suit your needs. Please look at the Lab Manual page to see a helpful list of tips for each software program you might want to use as a starting point. You can customize your profile to your heart's delight until it is exactly as YOU like it since no one else will be affected by your choices.

204 Profile: This room needs a special profile because the hardware is not powerful enough to generate all the profiles.

Log On to a Windows Profile

To log-on, the student clicks the desired profile. Once a student is logged-on, you might need to verify which profile they are using. To verify the active profile, click Start. On the second line from the bottom, you will see the Log Off icon followed by the active profile name.

Log Off a Windows Profile

You must teach your students to log-on and log-off faithfully  or the computer network will run very. Opening many profiles drains system resources!! Students must also log-off a profile to close access to their student folder if they use one. You can see that two profiles are active below—CAOT 112 and CAOT Department.

To log-off, click the Windows Start button and click the Log-Off button 2 times.

(Note: Clicking Switch User does NOT log them off!!)

Instructor Folders—Private

Jorge will create a special folder with your last name on a special high-security server. You can use this folder all semester to save any files you would like to be able to access from any networked computer in any of our labs or in your office.

To access your private files using a program like Word: Launch Word (or desired software); File, Open; browse to My Network Places, Entire Network, Microsoft Windows Network, Citynet, Public; when you see Public in the Name column, double-click it to open it; when prompted, enter your case-sensitive user name (your last name) and password (your employee number); browse to the desired folder with your last name on it and double-click to open it.

To access your private files using Search: Start, Search, For Files or Folders, Computers or People, A computer on the network; in the Computer Name box, type Public, and click Search; when you see Public in the Name column, double-click it to open it; when prompted, enter your case-sensitive user name (your last name) and password (your employee number); browse to the desired folder with your last name on it and double-click to open it; open the desired software (Word, or whatever) and open and save files.

To log-off your private files: When you are finished, log off the profile which will also log you off your folder: To log-off, click the Windows Start button and click the Log-Off button 2 times. (Note: Clicking Switch User does not log you off!!) If you do not log-off properly, and if you then move to another station and try to log-on to your folder again, you will get an error message similar to this:

Instructor Folders—Shared

Find out the name of your computer: Using your computer in your office, open My Computer, Properties, Computer Name tab, full computer name; write down the name or drag across it and copy the name—don't include the period at the end. We recommend that you name it LastnameOffice; for example, ZimmerlyOffice.

Create your folder and files: In Explorer, create a folder on your office computer; add your files to be shared into this folder, and turn on sharing for this folder.

Turn on sharing for the desired folder: Open Explorer, browse to the desired folder; right-click the folder, Properties, Sharing tab; under Network sharing and security, check Share this folder on the network; in the Share name box, type or paste your computer name; uncheck Allow network users to change my files; click OK.

To unshare folder or file:

Repeat the steps above but uncheck Share this folder on the network, OK.

For a student to access your shared file: Open Word (or desired program), File, Open, browse to My Network Places, Entire Network, Microsoft Windows Network, Citynet, Your Office Computer Name (ZimmerlyOffice, for example), and open desired folder and  file (112TESTSHARE\Tutorial 1 Test, for example).

To create a shortcut in any profile to access your shared folders: Start, Search, Other Search Options, Computers or people, A computer on the network, Computer name:—fill in your Computer Name from the preceding step (you might need to use all lowercase); Search; when your computer is found, right-click and choose Create Shortcut, Yes. The shortcut will now be on the Desktop. To access your computer and your shared files, click this shortcut.

Student Folder

At the start of the semester, give Jorge a list of students who want a folder with the initials of the student's first and last name, the last 4 digits of the student ID, and a password for each student. You and your students decide what the password should be. Make it clear that the CAOT Department assumes no responsibility whatsoever for any files stored on our computers. This is a service to students only. Jorge will create a special folder with the name described above which the student can use all semester to save files.

To access private student files using a program like Word: Launch Word (or desired software); File, Open; browse to My Network Places, Entire Network, Microsoft Windows Network, Citynet, Public; when you see Public in the Name column, double-click it to open it; when prompted, enter your case-sensitive user name (the student's first and last name and the last 4 digits of the student ID) and password (assigned by the teacher) when prompted; browse to the desired folder with the student's first and last name and the last 4 digits of the student ID on it and double-click to open it.

To access private student files using Search: Start, Search, For Files or Folders, Computers or People, A computer on the network; in the Computer Name box, type Public and click Search; when you see the computer name in the Name column, double-click it to open it; enter the user name (the student's first and last name and the last 4 digits of the student ID) and password (assigned by the teacher) when prompted; browse to the desired folder (initials of student's first and last name and the last 4 digits of student ID) and double-click on it; open the desired software (Word, or whatever) and open and save files.

To log-off student files: When the student is finished, he must log off the profile which will also log him off his student folder. To log-off, click the Windows Start button and click the Log-Off button 2 times. (Note: Clicking Switch User does not log the student off!!) If a student does not log-off, and he moves to another station, and tries to log-on to his folder again, he will get an error message similar to this and not be able to access his student files:

Network Mapping

To map the network for the LAN installation of GD9: Right-click Network Neighborhood, click Map Network Drive, and select Drive E. Set Path \\Acadntsrv3\GDPDL (try the drop-down arrow and edit the last few characters) and click OK. This server is also used for the FrontPage testing software under \\acadntsrv3\fp2002.

Managing Profiles

To create a profile: Start, Settings, Control Panel, User AccountsCreate a new account; name it, etc., log-on once to create the proper folders.

To delete a profile: Start, Settings, Control Panel, User Accounts, click the Account to Change, Delete the account, Delete files, Delete account.

To copy an existing profile to a new profile:

  1. Create a new profile—Start, Settings, Control Panel, User AccountsCreate a new account; log-on once to create the proper folders. Check in Windows Explorer to verify the folders were created properly.

  2. Log-off the new profile and log-on again as the systems default Administrator. To see Administrator as a choice at the log-on screen, press Ctrl-Alt-Del twice to reveal this account. Select it and log-on. (If this doesn't work, try typing Administrator as the account name in the Name box at log on.)

  3. Open Control Panel. Performance & Maintenance, System, Advanced tab;  under User Profiles, click Settings button. Select the user profile to be copied and click the Copy To button. (Note: You cannot be logged on to the source account—Copy To will be dimmed.) The Copy To location is C:\Documents and Settings\NewProfileName. (Note: This is the point at which the program may become non responsive after a minute or so. Rundll32.exe was the non-responding program. If this happens, close System Properties—third window in the back first—or it takes forever to get out of this.)

  4. Assuming the copy process went well, open Windows Explorer. Check to make sure that the settings and files have been transferred to the C:\Documents and Settings\NewProfileName user folders.

  5. Reboot the system and you should now be able to log on to the new copied profile.
